Road Trip to Shenandoah National Park

A road trip to Shenandoah National Park for New Years with our friends Ryan and Carrie.

Shenandoah National Park!

Day 1

Our adventure started at our house in Lexington where our friends Ryan & Carrie K. met us and we loaded the car and set out for Massanutten Resort in Virginia.

We made good time as we only made a few quick charging and food stops along the way. Unfortunately our smooth day of travel was ruined when we hit a deer only a few miles from our destination at the resort. Luckily the car took the hit fairly well and we were able to make it to the resort.

When we arrived, I ran in to check in since the reservation was under my name. The others decided to get out to try to inspect the car under the parking lot lights. The car had locked since I had walked away and when they tried to get out it starting blasting Phantom Of The Opera and honking the horn. This continued as they didn’t know how to turn it off. This provided an opportunity for us to get a laugh out of the situation.

Day 2

The next morning I checked out the car in the daylight and made a few calls to the insurance company to let them know what had happened.

Once taking care of the car we spent some time exploring the area and checked out their ski slope, which we decided to do later on in the day. We made a quick run to Walmart to pickup some groceries and spent the rest of the afternoon playing games and just hanging out in our room.

We ended the day with some night skiing on the slopes and planing for our hike the next day.

Day 3

The Shenandoah National Park charges a fee to enter if you don’t have an annual America the Beautiful Pass.

Our first stop in the park was Stony Man Trail. This is a short 1.5 mile hike that leads to a rocky viewpoint.

After a short drive along the famous Skyline Drive we parked at the Dark Hollow Falls Trailhead for our second hike of the day. Dark Hollow Falls is a 1.6 mile out-and-back trail that takes visitors to the Dark Hollow waterfall. Along the hike Ryan K. made sure to tell everyone that hiking was a “great way to end 2020!”

We finished our day in Shenandoah National Park with a scenic ride on Skyline Drive. That night we hung out in the room, played board games and watched the ball drop to welcome in 2021.

Day 4

Spent another day relaxing around the resort and hanging out.

Day 5

We checked out of Massanutten Resort in the morning and started our journey back to Kentucky. Thankfully the deer all stayed off the road during our return trip and we made it back home without any further damage to the car!
