A Day Trip from Germany to Austria

A quick visit to Salzburg, Austria from Munich, Germany.

Ashley and I typically plan out all of our travel on our own but since this was such a last minute trip, we decided to book an excursion to Salzburg, Austria through Viator. The package included our train tickets from Munich to Salzburg, a guided tour around the main points in the city, and then also provided several hours of free time.

Our first stop was at the Schloss Mirabell. The palace is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a historic palace and ornate gardens. Several scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed throughout the gardens.

After some time exploring the Schloss Mirabell we crossed over the Makartsteg Bridge which is covered in locks where lovers inscribe their initials and toss the key into the water.

We then continued to explore Salzburg by venturing through the tiny streets and historic squares. The guided tour ended just below the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Our tour guide gave us a few options on how to spend our 3 hours of free time which included visiting the fortress, restaurants to sample, and shops to visit.

Instead of staying local to Salzburg downtown, I had discovered that the Salzburg Airport was home to Red Bull Hangar-7 which is home to the Flying Bulls historic aircraft fleet. Once our guided tour was over we hopped in an Uber and headed out towards the airport.

The hangar included a variety of interesting airplanes, helicopters, aircraft engines, and F1 cars all housed in a modern glass building. It also happened to have one of the coolest bathrooms that Ashley or I had ever seen… so cool that we each ended up sneaking pictures of the bathroom without the other knowing.

Each aircraft in the building is airworthy and is flown on a regular schedule. Due to the nature of aircraft being operated, the aircraft on display frequently changes depending on what aircraft are undergoing maintenance or traveling.

After finishing our visit to Hangar-7 we took an Uber back into the city of Salzburg. With the remaining time we had before our train headed back towards Munich we purchased tickets on the Monchsberg Lift up to a scenic terrace that overlooks Salzburg’s Old Town.

The train ride back to Munich took under 2 hours and allowed us time to rest our legs and plan our adventure into the German countryside for the following day which included booking a rental car and hotel. You can read about our adventures in Germany HERE.
